studyball2Sometimes all it takes to stay close to your desk and in front of your computer to get your work done is the promise of future academic success. Other times – like when MerDer are getting ready to walk down the aisle – you wish that someone would physically chain you down to one spot just so you can hammer out that last bit of work.

Wish no more! With the Study Ball, you don’t need another party to subject you to the torture of forced labor because you can do it yourself for the low, low price of $115!

The 21-lb. Study Ball is basically a “prison-style” ball, chain and manacle made of steel that is rigged to a timer, according to Curiosite.com. The timer unlocks the device after the specified amount of time, which is indicated on a digital display. For safety, a tiny safety key is included so that the manacle can be unlocked at any time.

According to the site, which sells “unusual gifts for unusual people”, the product is:

“especially recommended for desperate parents whose children won’t study, people preparing for civil service exams who have trouble concentrating, and for all sorts of students in general. It’s also recommended for freelance workers: web designers, computer programmers, bloggers, architects, translators, and anyone else who spends long hours sitting in front of the computer.”

The amusing gadget is the product of Spanish designer Emilio Alarcon, who thought up the idea after speaking with a friend. “The project was born of a conversation I had with a friend who was studying for a civil service exam … He said: I haven’t left the house in a week, this is like being in jail,” said Alarcon.

Sounds like The Boyfriend’s description of studying for law school.

fireflylegosSeveral weeks ago, before this blawg was born, I sent in a vocal recording to the Sending a Wave podcast, a program for fans of the Firefly television series by Buffy creator and geek god Joss Whedon. The podcast had teamed up with Browncoats: Redemption, a fan film for charity, to host a contest to find the voice of Redemption, the ship in the movie.

I didn’t really expect too much; I just thought that it would be fun to send in an audition and it would give me an excuse to play around with GarageBand on my MacBook. But yesterday I discovered that I was one of five finalists! Confetti!

In retrospect, and after listening to the clip I sent in, I think I might have taken the prompt to sound matter of fact “while still sounding cute” a little too seriously, as my voice sounds more anime and all-too-American than austere and all-knowing. These are the times that I wish I were a Brit … or French. *Le-Sigh*

You can listen to the other awesome contestants here, and vote for your favorite in the poll in the sidebar.

free_books_onlineWelcome to the Frugal Finds Weekend edition! The Blawgirl shares frugal living ideas she comes across every Saturday morning.

Be sure to check back 11:30 (ish) Monday through Friday when The Blawgirl crawls the Interwebz to find steals and deals for the frugal law student and the competitive bargain shopper.

Hey, undergrads. So the semester is winding down, and you’re (hopefully) showing those finals who’s boss. You’ve pwned Plato. You’ve told science to suck it. You’ve made communications law cry and have taken its candy.

But, before you can hit the beach or start that new internship before law school, you have to figure out what you’re going to do with the stack of textbooks that cost you a pretty penny that now are just worth 15 or so crispy chicken sandwiches at Carl’s Jr. Sure you can sell them back to your campus bookstore or to an online company like Cash4Books.net, but there are several other options available to you.

  • Rather than sell your books for pennies on the dollar, you can try trading your books online through sites like Textbookrevolt.com, Paperbackswap.com, or Textswap.com. The concept is pretty simple for most of these kinds of sites: mail a book and get a book in exchange. You get a new book for the old book! Sure, you’re not taking an undergrad class in the fall. But some of the titles available could make for great non-school reading depending on your interests.
  • You can try donating your books to your local public library. Even if the books don’t become part of the collection, there may be a non-profit group that supports the library that may be able to sell the books in one of its booksales.

If you have an old edition of a book that no one is willing to take, you can help the book ascend to another state of being with a couple of these crafty and creative ideas.

  • You can turn a stack of old books into a cool book-stack lamp, like the one found at the DIY Network Web site.
  • Teaforjoy.com recommends turning book pages into decoupage bracelets, giftags or a work of art.
  • Lifehacker via VideoJug has an awesome idea to turn your “least-loved” book into an invisible bookshelf.
  • If you’re a scrapbooker, you can cut out images and letters for future projects.

438037919_36785da891In The Shark Attack, the Blawgirl brings you a list of links to blog posts published at The Shark, a blawg written by and for law students.

Not all of Chapman thrilled to see you. Last week, I was pretty thrilled to discover The Daily Chapman, a satirical blog about Chapman University, but I was even more thrilled to see to see that they had written a piece about law school visiting professor and torture memo writer John Yoo’s tortuous law school class. Yoo ought to check out the piece at The Shark, which also has a link to the article. Yoo may find it funny and Yoo-seful. OK. I’m done.

Want to learn some yoga? Go to law school. Law school seems the least likely place to get your “Ohm” on. But the Roger Williams University School of Law is trying to change that. The associate dean of students at the law school instituted a class that teaches students meditation and relaxation techniques that future lawyers can use before going into the courtroom. It also supposedly teaches them how not to be soulless, hope-eating zombies with their clients and fellow lawyers.

Wait, can a disbarred attorney work for a law school? The Yoo saga saw more developments this week after the Office of Professional Responsibility within the Justice Department indicated that it is unlikely that former Bush administration legal advisers would face criminal prosecution. It did, however, leave open the possibility of a potential disbarment for Yoo, and impeachment for his former boss Jay S. Bybee, who is now a federal appeals court judge.

  • Free Shiny Toy Guns song. Amazon.com has free downloads of the song “Major Tom” from the album of the same name by Shiny Toy Guns. (via DealNews)
  • 99 cents for 48 classical guitar tracks. Today only, the Amazon MP3 Store has downloads of Guitar Heroes’ Guitar Heroes, a classical guitar album, for 99 cents. The album has a whopping 48 tracks (songs are broken up into their various movements) and is valued at $37!  Because there aren’t any vocals, this album should make great background music for studying. But I doubt it has the song in the video at the end of this article!
